Obituary for Ernest Harley "Ernie" Jarvis

Ernest Harley "Ernie"  Jarvis
Ernest “Ernie” Harley Jarvis, 71, of Sutton, WV, peacefully passed away at home surrounded by his family on July 16, 2015 after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Gassaway, WV on July 2, 1944 to Clyde Jarvis and Gwen (Sands) Jarvis Berry, who precede him in death.

He is also preceded in death by his son, James Leake, his step-father, Harry Berry, and his brother, Bill Jarvis.

Those surviving left to honor his memory are his wife, Laura Jarvis, married on December 24, 2003; daughter, Kelly Kniceley and her husband, Denver of Sutton, WV; sons, Tim Jarvis, Josh Jarvis, and Matthew Haley, all of Sutton, WV; grandchildren, Caitlin Dennison, Damon and Megan Jarvis, Alexis, Ethan and Jocelyn Haley, and Jasmine and Camylle Leake. Also surviving are sisters, Lorna Sue James and her husband John of Sutton, WV and Norma Bright and her husband David, of Lost Creek, WV.

Ernie was a 1963 graduate of Sutton High School. He later joined the Air Force and served during the Vietnam Era. He worked for Bell Atlantic/Verizon for many years until retirement. During this time, he became a lifetime member of Telephone Pioneers of America, also serving as President of WV Chapter. He was actively involved in many organizations and clubs. He was a founding member of the International Sports Jamboree for the Handicapped and was devoted to this organization for 35 years. He had also been previously involved with the Central WV Riding Club, American Quarter Horse Association, Appaloosa Club, The Bass Club , The Archery Club and was a member of Sutton Moose Lodge, participating in many charitable activities.Ernie was also an avid Beagler and participated in field trials across the Mid and Eastern U.S. for many years.

Of all his accomplishments, Ernie was most proud of his service contribution to the youth of Braxton County. He enjoyed coaching and being involved in youth sport activities. He worked as a coach for BCMS Football, BCHS Softball and Volleyball and Braxton County Little League.

Ernie was Methodist by faith. At his request, his body will be cremated. Family will receive friends at the Stockert-Paletti Funeral Home located at 378 Flatwoods Corner Road, Flatwoods, WV 26621 on Monday, July 20, 2015 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. A private family interment service will follow at the family farm.
