Obituary for Bertha May Cogar
Bertha May Hutchison Cogar, 88, of Stone Run Rd., Flatwoods, WV, passed away at her home on Wednesday, September 9, 2020, after fighting Multiple Myeloma for over two years. Bertha was born on March 15, 1932 in Corley, WV, the daughter of the late Oley Clark and Willa Ann Eubank Hutchison. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Frederick “Bob” Cogar; four sisters: Arlie Hutchison, Ada Ruth Hutchison, Martha Pearl Cartee, and Lucy Hutchison; three brothers: Dana, Lloyd, and Willis Hutchison; and one granddaughter, Amber Cogar. Bertha is Survived by one sister, Mary Ann McClure of Elkview, WV; two children: Janet Angotti and husband Michael of Clarksburg, and Tim Cogar and wife Chris of Flatwoods; her grandchildren: Ben Angotti of Denver, CO, Joe Angotti and wife Sarah of Pittsburgh, PA, Tom Angotti of Denver, CO, Molly Angotti and fiancé Tony Sestito of Clarksburg, Amelia Angotti of Clarksburg, Wesley Jarrell of Flatwoods, Ben Jarrell of Flatwoods, Bobby Cogar and wife Ashkiea of Cross Lanes, and Emily Cogar of Flatwoods; and her great-grandchildren: Scarlet Angotti, Josephine Angotti, Gianna Sestito, Gabby Jarrell, and Tristen Jarrell.
Bertha lived with Arlie in Clarksburg and attended West Virginia Business College, then worked as a secretary. She was married to Bob in 1953 and moved to Saint Louis for Bob to attend diesel mechanic school while Bertha worked as a secretary, before moving back to West Virginia. After Bob’s death, Bertha and her two children moved back to Stone Run, where they lived with Ada Ruth. Bertha retired after being a teacher’s aide for over 25 years at Flatwoods Elementary School. She was a life-long member of Stone Run United Methodist Church, where she was also treasurer for over 10 years. She loved going to church on Sunday mornings, then coming home to watch another sermon on TV after Sunday lunches. She was very active outdoors and enjoyed growing flowers in various beds around her home, blueberries in her blueberry patch, and vegetables in her garden. She also enjoyed canning vegetables from her garden and sending quarts of green beans home with her grandchildren. Bertha was active in 4-H when she was young and was a 4-H All Star, then went on to start and lead the Stone Run Busy Beavers 4-H club for over 10 years. She loved animals, including many cats over the years, and greatly enjoyed feeding and watching birds throughout her life.
Bertha was beloved by her family for her sunny disposition. The highlight of any trip to Grandma B’s house was getting some of her signature chuckles. A fantastic cook and baker, she was most famous for her blueberry cobblers and peanut butter logs. Bertha’s was home to regular Sunday lunches, most family gatherings, and reunions over the years. As well as being “home” to many family members who needed a place to stay over the years.
On Saturday September 12th, 2020, visitation will be held in a socially distanced manner at 10:30-11:30 a.m., at Stockert-Paletti Funeral Home in Flatwoods, WV. Funeral Services will be graveside at 12 p.m., Eric Veltre officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Stone Run Cemetery for its upkeep. (1617 Stone Run Rd. Flatwoods, WV 26621)
