Obituary for Maureen Agnes McPherson

Peacefully and without reservation, Maureen Agnes McPherson walked into the arms of her loved ones in heaven, on Thursday, January 10th, 2019.

Maureen was born to the late Thomas Rooney, of England and Leta Brown, of Hettie, WV on March 29th, 1947.

As a Veteran nurse and SGT of the US Air Force, Maureen’s fearless and adventurous spirit lead her to many countries and ultimately to serve in Taiwan, during the Vietnam War. Her rebellious sense of humor created many stateside adventures as well. Restaurants, shopping trips and later in life, even doctor visits were especially entertaining. Her dark eyes would twinkle with mischief, always the entertainer, and with a word she’d leave a trail of laughter wherever she’d go.

No question too small, her curiosity and willingness to listen, lead her to play many roles in the lives of others. She lended a strong voice of reason, an empathetic ear to listen, and a willing shoulder to cry on, to many different people, especially her patients. A devout Catholic, Maureen spent many years selflessly donating her nursing services to Sisters of the Poor, an international congregation of Roman Catholic women serving the elderly poor.

Maureen’s professional career as a nurse was sprinkled throughout New York City and its Burroughs, including Calvary Hospital in Bronx, NY and St. Vincent’s Hospital in Harrison, NY. Maureen maintained the title of Nurse, long after her retirement, caring for friends and family whenever and wherever she was needed.

Maureen was preceded in death by her mother and father, Thomas and Leta Rooney; sister, Patricia Timmerman; daughter, Kristy Riglioni; and niece, Kerri Gibney. She is survived by her husband Robert McPherson of Burnsville, WV and son Kenneth Kanoy of Weston, WV; two brothers, Thomas Rooney and wife Nuala of Yonkers, NY, and Richard Rooney of Yonkers, NY; one sister-in-law, Ann Marie McPherson of White Plains, NY; nieces Jackie DeMatteo and Beverly Doering; nephews Justin McPherson and Jordan Timmerman. She is also survived by 4 great nephews, 4 great nieces, and one grandson, Bryce Holt.

A family graveside service will be held at the Green Hill Cemetery, located in Braxton County, WV, Sunday, January 13th at 2PM. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Maureen’s Memory may be made to West Virginia Caring. Donations can be made to: West Virginia Caring, Advanced Illness Care P.O. Box 760 Arthurdale, WV 26520.
