Obituary for Jerry Eldon Long

Jerry Eldon Long, 81, of Tesla, WV passed away on Thursday, March 29, 2018 at the Charleston Area Medical Center in Charleston, WV. He was born April 7, 1936 at home in Tesla WV, to the late Patrick “PJ” Long and Ruby (Donithan) Long. Also preceding him in death was the love of his life, Patricia (Collins) Long and daughter, Reverend Susan Dawn Rector.
He is survived by son, David Long and wife, Phyllis of Tesla, WV. Two grandchildren A.J. Long and Girl Friend Janessia Cool of Tesla and Nic Long of Tesla, Son-In-Law Reverend Stephen Rector. Also surviving is his best friend his dog Nike.
Jerry graduated from Sutton High School with the Class of 1954. At age 16 Jerry started working at Marple Funeral Home in Sutton. Jerry then went to college at West Virginia Tech. Jerry then served his Country in the United States Army and was stationed in Hawaii. He then worked at Home National Bank in Sutton. He then worked as a Sheriff’s Deputy in Braxton County and He was a firefighter for Sutton Volunteer Fire Department for 60 years. Jerry joined the IBEW and was a master electrician and then he taught Electrician classes at Braxton County High School and retired with 20 years of services. He then worked at Stockert Funeral Home in Flatwoods for 10 years. Jerry loved his family and his friends. Jerry could go anywhere in the U.S. and would run into someone he knew.
Family will receive friends at the Stockert-Paletti Funeral Home, 378 Flatwoods Corner Flatwoods Road, Flatwoods, WV 26621 from 5-9 p.m. on Monday, April 2, 2018. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, April 3, 2018, at the Gassaway United Methodist Church with Reverend Jim Malick officiating. Per Jerry’s request he will be cremated. Following Cremation, interment will follow in Tesla Cemetery where he will receive Full Military Honors from American Legion Post 33 and gravesite rites By the Strange Creek Masonic Lodge. In lieu of Flowers donations can be made to the Patricia A. Long Children’s Section at the Sutton Public Library, 500 Main Street, Sutton WV 26601.
