Obituary for Gary Eugene Drake

Gary Eugene  Drake
Gary E. Drake, 83, of Burnsville, WV passed August 27, 2017.
He was born on July 19, 1934 to Herman and Nina (Moyers) Drake. His mother and newly born brother, Garrett, passed away when Gary was 2 years old. He was raised by his grandparents Ira and Jessie Moyers. Gary became the man of the house at 12 years old when his grandfather passed away.
Gary graduated from Burnsville High School in 1952. He served in the United States Air Force for 4 years. When he returned home he became a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers. He worked on projects such as Summersville Dam, Interstate 79 and the Burnsville Dam.
Gary’s career operating heavy equipment lead to the strip mining industry. He worked for Black Rock Construction, Grafton Coal Company and retired from Julianna Coal Company.
Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing and riding four-wheelers. He like telling stores and working with his hands. He was the groundskeeper at the Copen Cemetery for 25 years.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, of 54 years; two daughters, Sharon Williams and husband, Barry, of Mooresville, NC and Jean Mesmer and husband, Jess, of Fort Myers, FL. He is also survived by three grandsons, Herbie Ratliff and wife, Bethany, Adam Williams and Joshua Mesmer; three granddaughters, Tiffany Ratliff, Taylor Ratliff and Elainah Uldrich.
Family will receive friends on Friday, September 1, 2017 from 12-2 pm at the Stockert-Paletti Funeral Home, 378 Flatwoods Corner Road, Flatwoods, WV 26621. Funeral services will follow visitation at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Delmas Singleton and Pastor Mike Ludle officiating. Interment will follow in the Copen Cemetery.
