Obituary for William H.G. Hunt

William H.G. Hunt
William H.G. "Bill" Hunt, 68, succumbed to cancer on Aug. 20, 2015 at Braxton County Memorial Hospital. He was born June 18, 1947 in Washington, D.C., and lived most of his youth in West Hartford, Conn. In 1963 he ventured to Leesburg, Va., to meet his "country cousins." That is also where he met his wife, Mary Ann, whom he married Nov. 28, 1970.

In 1973 the couple relocated to Gassaway, where Hunt’s employer was constructing a new industrial plant. Bill and Mary Ann loved the area and decided to stay, leading to the birth of Hunt Real Estate, which prospered for many years.

The Hunts returned to Leesburg in 1987, where Bill went back to school, earning a GRI in residential real estate and a CCIM degree for commercial sales. His company, Dulles Commercial Real Estate, was an area leader. In 2008 the Hunts sold the company and returned to their beloved West Virginia.

Retirement was not in Bill’s blood: he purchased Sutton Lake Marina, which he completely rebuilt and modernized. It became the county’s leading recreational facility. Bill’s energy produced major growth and expansion until Bill sold the facility in 2014. Not content to put his feet up, he purchased the old Braxton Motor Building in downtown Sutton. After extensive remodeling he opened the doors of Ride-On Motorcycle Adventures in July of this year.

Bill loved boating, riding motorcycles and had a passion for restoring old wooden boats. Bill was active in his community and supported a number of charitable organizations and events.

Left to cherish Bill’s memory are his loving wife of 45 years, Mary Ann; sons, William Hunt, Jr. of Colonial Highway Hamilton, Va., and Thomas and wife, Erin, of Leesburg, Va.; one granddaughter, Audrey; and a host of friends "and I do mean friends."

The Hunt family invites friends to join them in a celebration of Bill’s life between the hours of 4 and 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, at Stockert-Paletti Funeral Home, Flatwoods.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Bill’s name to the Sutton Volunteer Fire Department, 403 Main St., Sutton, WV 26601.
